Hymn

Bonaventure, called seraphic,
Drew his knowledge from above
Contemplating joys of heaven
The Eternal Source of love.

All his bearing radiated
Qualities resembling his
Who upon a cross was baited
Died to bring us to his bliss.

Teacher, equal to Saint Thomas
Writer of Saint Francis' life
Drinking in his very spirit
Sharing in his very love.

Called his Order's second founder
Guiding it through years of strife
He, when raised to rank of prelate
Still preferred a hidden life.

Faithful till the end to Jesus
Serving as the least of men,
Soon he reached his compensation
All he'd given, now his gain.

Glory to the triune Godhead
Sung so often by this saint,
May he from his place in heaven
Help the weary and the faint.

Psalmody

Psalm 14

Ant. 1:He was like the light shining on the lamp-stand in the house of the Lord.

Lord, who shall be admitted to your tent *
and dwell on your holy mountain?

He who walks without fault; *
he who acts with justice

and speaks the truth from his heart; *
he who does not slander with his tongue;

he who does no wrong to his brother, *
who casts no slur on his neighbour,

who holds the godless in disdain, *
but honours those who fear the Lord;

he who keeps his pledge, come what may; *
who takes no interest on a loan

and accepts no bribes against the innocent. *
Such a man will stand firm for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.

Ant. 1:He was like the light shining on the lamp-stand in the house of the Lord.

Psalm 111

Ant. 2:The Lord gave him the bread of life and understanding to eat, and the water of saving wisdom to drink.

Happy the man who fears the Lord, *
who takes delight in all his commands.

His sons will be powerful on earth; *
the children of the upright are blessed.

Riches and wealth are in his house; *
his justice stands firm for ever.

He is a light in the darkness for the upright: *
he is generous, merciful and just.

The good man takes pity and lends, *
he conducts his affairs with honour.

The just man will never waver: *
he will be remembered forever.

He has no fear of evil news; *
with a firm heart he trusts in the Lord.

With a steadfast heart he will not fear; *
he will see the downfall of his foes.

Open-handed, he gives to the poor; +
his justice stands firm forever. *
His head will be raised in glory.

The wicked man sees and is angry, +
grinds his teeth and fades away; *
the desire of the wicked leads to doom.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.

Ant. 2:The Lord gave him the bread of life and understanding to eat, and the water of saving wisdom to drink.

Canticle: Rev. 15, 3-4

Ant. 3:His life brought joy to the Church; how good it is to remember him.

Great and wonderful are your deeds, *
O Lord God the Almighty!

Just and true are your ways, *
O King of the ages!

Who shall not fear and glorify your name, O Lord? *
For you alone are holy.

All nations shall come and worship you, *
for your judgements have been revealed.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.

Ant. 3:His life brought joy to the Church; how good it is to remember him.

Scripture Reading [Dan.12, 3]
The learned will shine as brightly as the vault of heaven, and those who have instructed many in virtue, as bright as stars for all eternity.

Magnificat Antiphon
O holy Doctor, Saint Bonaventure, light of the Church, lover of the law of God, pray for us to the Son of God.

My soul glorifies the Lord, *
my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour.

He looks on his servant in her lowliness; *
henceforth all ages will call me blessed.

The Almighty works marvels for me. *
Holy his name!

His mercy is from age to age, *
on those who fear him.

He puts forth his arm in strength *
and scatters the proud-hearted.

He casts the mighty from their thrones *
and raises the lowly.

He fills the starving with good things, *
sends the rich away empty.

He protects Israel, his servant, *
remembering his mercy,

the mercy promised to our fathers, *
to Abraham and his sons for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.

Magnificat Antiphon
O holy Doctor, Saint Bonaventure, light of the Church, lover of the law of God, pray for us to the Son of God.

Intercessions
Christ our Lord was appointed by the Father as high priest of mankind. Let us offer him worthy praises as we humbly pray:
Save us, Lord.【R】

Through the wood of the cross you reconciled the world to the Father
- keep us true to your name that we may all be one as you and the Father are one.【R】

Through holy pastors you communicate your redemption to mankind
- we are yours through the shedding of your blood: may we never be separated from your love.【R】

You have anointed holy pastors within the community of the Church and enriched them with the gifts of the Holy Spirit
- fill us also with the strength the Spirit gives.【R】

Through the pastors of the Church you offer eternal life to your people
- grant salvation to the dead, redeemed by your precious blood.【R】

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Concluding Prayer
Almighty God and Father, on this feast of Saint Bonaventure, enlighten our minds with the splendour of his teaching, and help us to imitate his ardent love of you: we ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
