Evening Prayer
0424 Martyr Memorial
Hymn
Praise to the holiest in the height,
and in the depth be praise,
in all his words most wonderful,
most sure in all his ways.
O loving wisdom of our God!
When all was sin and shame,
a second Adam to the fight,
and to the rescue came.
O wisest Love! That flesh and blood,
which did in Adam fail,
should strive afresh against the foe,
should strive and should prevail.
And that a higher gift than grace
should flesh and blood refine,
God's presence and his very self,
and Essence all divine.
O generous love! That he who smote
in man for man the foe,
the double agony in man
for man should undergo.
And in the garden secretly
and on the Cross on high,
should teach his brethren and inspire
to suffer and to die.
Praise to the holiest in the height,
and in the depth be praise,
in all his words most wonderful,
most sure in all his ways.

Scripture Reading [Rom. 8, 8-12]
Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit who dwells in you. So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
Short Responsory
【V】:God tested them and found them worthy of himself, alleluia, alleluia.
【R】:God tested them and found them worthy of himself, alleluia, alleluia.
【V】:Their hope is full of immortality, alleluia, alleluia.
【R】:God tested them and found them worthy of himself, alleluia, alleluia.
【V】:Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
【R】:God tested them and found them worthy of himself, alleluia, alleluia.
Magnificat Antiphon
Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit, alleluia.
My soul glorifies the Lord, *
my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour.
He looks on his servant in her lowliness; *
henceforth all ages will call me blessed.
The Almighty works marvels for me. *
Holy his name!
His mercy is from age to age, *
on those who fear him.
He puts forth his arm in strength *
and scatters the proud-hearted.
He casts the mighty from their thrones *
and raises the lowly.
He fills the starving with good things, *
sends the rich away empty.
He protects Israel, his servant, *
remembering his mercy,
the mercy promised to our fathers, *
to Abraham and his sons for ever.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
Magnificat Antiphon
Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit, alleluia.
Intercessions
Let us give thanks to the king of martyrs, for this is the hour when he offered himself in the last supper and laid down his life on the cross:
【R】We praise you, Christ the Lord.
We praise you, Christ our Saviour, example and strength of the martyrs, because you have loved us to the end.【R】
Because, in your servant Fidelis, you have given us a great example of fidelity and courage.【R】
Because you have brought us to this day with the gift of faith intact.【R】
Because of the many brothers who today have come to share in your saving death.【R】
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Concluding Prayer
Lord God, you crowned Saint Fidelis with a martyr's death, when, filled with your love, he was preaching the faith. Let our lives be rooted in love, so that with him, and by his prayer, we may know the power of Christ's resurrection. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
